An old Russian Akula submarine armed with ballistic nuclear missiles gets a new captain. The subs spends months at a time in the mid-Atlantic motionless often resting on the bottom to avoid detection. Captain Pavel seems to care very little for practical matters or protocol. In fact, he feels their jobs are a waste of time and prefers to lead discussions groups about spiritual matters. He dresses in a cassock and grows a long beard. His favourite pastime is shamanic drumming. The more traditional sailors begin to have doubts. The Captain is drawing more and more men into his cult. Shamanic drumming is often heard on the boat. The Americans are hearing it too and are also confused. To the remaining regular sailors, if they are asked to do their duty, will he fail Russia or even endanger them? It’s clear he dislikes nuclear weapons – and doesn’t respect his task or duty. Will the remaining crew tolerate a Captain who believes in sending out messages of peace and love to the universe each night? And wants the crew to save the world via journeying with their minds and travelling outside the hull.
