Black Sea is really Black is a road movie of sorts, tracing Medoidze’s car journey from the Cave City of Vardzia in Eastern Georgia to the Black Sea: a diagonal line from high to low point, from the North to the South, describing a trajectory of Liberty. The film recounts artists’s experience of visiting the Medieval caves in Medoidze’s signature style of fragmented storytelling, where past and present collide. Parallel to this journey, an unnamed protagonist (a book?) invites the viewer to escape.
