Roland, the only black person in our workshop, a calm, straightforward character, got badly treated by the police. He took part in a demonstration demanding answers to some of the unsolved and suspicious circumstances surrounding the death of Colin Roach in Stoke Newington Police Station.
A deep conservative fear has been that of aliens – first the Irish, then the Jews, lately the Caribbeans and Asians. In each case the stereotype constituted a ‘photographic negative’ of the Anglo-Saxon inhabitants.
Barbara, a mother, said: ‘Doing something different is like moving out of your class, that means you are taking more power which, you know, is really not on. But you got to do it for your own strength.’ – W.T.
