A Blemished Code gives voice through spoken and sung script to the work and life of artist Margaret Benyon, a pioneer in the use of holography. Holography has been described as system for encoding space, structurally closer to systems like maps or the freeze-drying of coffee. The hyper-real aspects of holography both attract and repulse. From the early optimism and interest surrounding holograms, to devaluation, commercialisation and the ubiquity of lasers, a particular history of a medium is traced as witnessed through Benyon’s life-long dedicated practice.
“Giving voice to the unsung legacy of a pioneering woman artist, A Blemished Code is an impassioned meditation on the representation of female artists, the balancing of creative and domestic life, and the inherent tensions of being a woman working with new technology.”
