A theory of holography described how a three-dimensional image of information, as patterns encoded in a beam of light, could be stored on a photographic plate. The theory was written in 1947 by Dennis Gabor and the coherent light source required was eventually provided by lasers around twenty years later, as technology advanced. Based on the early experiences of artist Margaret Benyon during a foundational period of holography as a medium, Back as Front, Inside as Out foregrounds an experimentation and pursuit through laboratories, domestic settings, rigorous action, exploration and optimism.
