A meditation on the iconography of celebrities, fusing video, Super 8 film and archive footage to create a fluid and densely layered poem of images and sounds. Lyrical and elegiac, the work positions celebrities as epic figures, as ghosts in the cathode rays who have passed beyond their own insignificant physical existence. Their public poses and private tragedies are consumed and regurgitated by the media for us to lose ourselves in and to forget; as the voice-over declares, “They do our living on our behalf, they do our dying for us.”. Finding a meeting point for ritual, religion and the mass media ‘Celebrities’ also forms a requiem mass for Rock Hudson.
