About twenty one years ago, Play Mountain place was created as an alternative to public education. It became one of the first West Coast schools to offer children the opportunity to learn in a non-coercive environment.
The film Play Mountain Place documents the feelings, relationships, and activities of children growing and learning without grades or competition. Teachers try to relate to the children as other people with equal rights and responsibilities. Emphasis is placed on developing confidence, independence, and above all, sensitive and healthy human relationships. Children assisted in the making of Play Mountain Place by assisting with the sound equipment. In addition, all the music is performed by the students.
Many people have never seen a school in which children are free to plan and direct their daily activities, and cannot imagine what it would be like.
