The credits echo the provocations of his other films: ‘Joseph Plateau had no shit in his eyes; clear it out of yours.’
“Plateau, one time professor of physics and optical experimenter, created the phenakistoscope, and of his two extant examples, Lethem has chosen the one which depicts a vampire changing into the head of a woman, a transformation which is repeated a thousand times in the course of the film. The camera and its angle are static, and the only variations possible are in the speeds at which the phenakistoscope is turned and the shutter alterations within the camera…those who stay will marvel at the sheer beauty of these ancient moving images.” – Mike Wallington, Cinema Magazine.
