God Save the Queen

Summer 1977, London, United Kingdom. The Sex Pistols release the song ‘God Save The Queen’ to coincide with the Queen’s Jubilee – 25 years on the throne. It’s immediately banned. Even though it reaches Number 1 in the Hit Parade, it’s never heard on the radio – it’s silenced. As a form of cheeky tribute to the original anarchic impulse and visual refreshment of the original song, our version explores the power of British Sign Language to convey the message which remains compelling.
The film was made to coincide with the Queen’s Golden Jubilee of 2002 – 50 years on the throne – and features deaf film maker and performer Sam Dore. 2002 was also the year that British Sign Language finally received official recognition from the British government.
