Dula is based on interviews with Poles in Warsaw, Crackov , and London during 1981-82. Some of their comments and stories speak of recent events, others of the struggles of World War Two in the limbo of jails, camps and sewers.
In the film these have been woven into a single train of thought, moving from oral history to mythology. The very act of recounting memories is a way of gaining an identity – for those who tell them and for those who listen. The woman story-teller ends the film by asking Can you even imagine what I am saying?. Dula attempts to do just that.
