Buffalo One, Buffalo Two… opens with written questions from a mental stability questionnaire. The following images, of darkly lit interiors are the scene of a private dance by an unrecognisable figure caught up in her own alienation.
The sound of thunder, the constant whispering soundtrack, all convey a sense of isolation and solitude emphasised by the bare and bleak surrounding spaces. The figure, placed in interiors akin to mental institutions fixed in a silence broken only by other voices and distant sounds, her body becoming a place of momentary dramas not in her control.
Buffalo One, Buffalo Two…engages many elements present in notions of madness and mental breakdown but does so neither as a direct critique or a moralistic discourse, rather it creates an accessible yet complex text which attempts to enter the very state of ‘insanity’ – Michael Maziere.
