‘Place Setting’, Nina Thomas, 2024. Courtesy of the artist.

Join us for an afternoon dedicated to fostering dialogue and connection within the d/Deaf and hard-of-hearing communities. Hosted by artists Nina Thomas and Damien Robinson, this workshop offers a space for participants to share their stories and imagine the future of d/Deaf communities.

This is a free event, please book a ticket, by clicking the Book button above.

The session begins with collectively experiencing the solo exhibition by Nina Thomas at LUX. Following the exhibition tour, Nina and Damien will guide a discussion on the vital role of community spaces that are increasingly becoming rare yet offer something different to online communities that may have replaced them. The workshop will continue with a series of inclusive activities for participants to express their experiences and perspectives on the evolving landscape of d/Deaf communities.

As the day concludes, participants will have the opportunity to reflect on the wisdom collectively gathered and imagine d/Deaf futures.

BSL interpretation and STTR will be provided (TBC)

‘Place Setting’ was commissioned by Animate Projects and British Ceramics Biennial. The project has been supported by Deaflinks, The Willows School and Spode Museum Trust.

Supported using public funding from the National Lottery through Arts Council England.

About the Artist:

Nina Thomas grew up in Staffordshire, and now lives in London.

She works predominantly with film and installation, exploring overlooked or under-explored stories and histories. Recent work has focused on her experience of becoming deaf and subsequently seeking to understand other deaf experiences.

Nina is profoundly deaf, and as a founding member of The Film Bunch, a deaf and hard of hearing film organisation, she has curated the online screening Deaf Experience and was commissioned by Pan Macmillan to create an animation for poet Raymond Antrobus. Her film Silence was commissioned and exhibited by LUX, London in 2020. She has worked on access and advisory projects at the V&A, The Wallace Collection, National Disability Art Collection and Archive (NDACA), The British Museum, Shape Arts and the D4D research programme. Nina is a trustee at Stagetext.

Damien Robinson is a deaf visual artist based in Southend-on-Sea working with digital, print, and
found media equipment and strategies. Her work was originally print-based; based on children’s
stories and toys, it was exhibited in venues as diverse as phone boxes and the National Art Library.
Her practice developed through new media experimentation, influenced by work with artist
collectives (including MediaShed) and their open approach to technical and creative participation.
She has developed works for traditional gallery spaces and less conventional environments; from
wildlife reserves to fire training towers to maternity wards . Repurposing and misusing processes
and technologies (often through lack of access to learning mechanisms as a D/deaf artist), allows
her to discover new processes and outcomes.

She has exhibited nationally and internationally as an individual and with collaborative works at
Focal Point Gallery , Banff NMI , Ars Electronica , Metal Culture, Beecroft Art Gallery, and TOW. She
has developed commissions and digital engagement projects for organisations including
Commissions East , Firstsite , ACAVA , Bow Arts , Studio 3 Arts , Space Studios , Photographers Gallery ,
and Essex County Council . Online works have included commissions ( iniva ) and exhibitions ( Shape
Arts ), plus residencies for PVA Medialab and Vital Capacities .
