Michael Curran’s new film, Look What They Done To My Song explores the themes of spectacle, performance, narrative order and the dynamic that is created between sculptural composition and film. Three songs – The Devil is Afraid of Music, What have they done to my song, Ma and How does it Feel to
Feel? – were performed and filmed in the exhibition space of Matt’s Gallery, creating an open recording session and film set for three days. The film begins with a pianist waiting patiently for the film crew to shift
cables and equipment before the take begins. He appears to warm up with a few bars of another piece of music and then the first song, The Devil Is Afraid of Music. As it is played and sung, other characters begin to appear, perhaps listening and reflecting on this performance, if they can even hear it.
