On & For Production is a Europe-wide initiative committed to addressing the specific conditions, requirements and discourse surrounding the production of artists’ film in both practical and conceptual terms. It is conceived as a two-fold event: on one hand, it convenes a series of professional work sessions for artists to share film projects in development in order to gain conceptual and strategic feedback and to seek out prospective co-producers. On the other, it provides an occasion to bring together organisations, professionals and artists who have a consolidated expertise in artistic film production in order to share, discuss and disseminate different modes of working.

On & For Production has been shaped in response to the particular challenges that affect the funding, production and distribution of artists’ film, an increasingly fertile field of cultural production that occupies a unique position at the intersection of the film industry and the contemporary art world. Unlike the film industry, there are no prescribed models or procedures for producing artists’ film and, as a consequence, the structures and strategies that are put into place must constantly be redefined according to the specific context of each project. By proposing a paradigm of dialogue and collaboration, On & For Production aims to identify, share, develop and implement the resources and tools necessary to negotiate the contingent conditions inherent to the production of artists’ film.

Following two pilot editions that took place in Brussels in April 2014 and April 2015, On & For Production is now a two-year, Europe-wide project organised by Auguste Orts (Brussels) in partnership with LUX (London) and Centro de Arte Dos de Mayo (CA2M) (Madrid). Throughout 2015–16, each partnering organisation will host an edition of On & For Production, beginning in London in October 2015, then Brussels in April 2016 and finally Madrid in June 2016.
