10am – 4pm

In this black and white image, a face is partially submerged in water, captured by a partially submerged camera. The water acts as a magnifying lens, distorting and enlarging the lower half of the face. Above the waterline, the forehead emerges, illuminated by a glow from the sunlight

A two day 16mm film workshop working closely with relationships of light, exposure, and camera superimposition

Artist Vicky Smith is currently working with film stocks and processing methods in ways that run counter to their industry purpose: restrictions that also offer creative possibilities. The longer days of the year maximise the potential for impressing available light onto film that needs plenty of exposure. This workshop will offer opportunities to consider both the nourishing and damaging effect of the sun’s rays on the body and on film material. To imprint sufficient light on these slow stocks, multiple exposures and super-impositions may be necessary: these will be realised by using the 16mm Bolex rewind function.

Participants will make short 16mm film sketches, from the concept stage to the final screening. There will be opportunities to work in-depth with the Bolex camera, to build confidence for later independent use. Participants will be invited to respond to themes of exposure at both physical and psychological levels (issues of visibility, anxiety, pressure). With reference to the work of photo-chemical filmmaking researchers and practitioners, there will be a discussion on the theme of resourcefulness with analogue practice and the contexts for exhibition of such work.

Participants will learn the following skills and knowledge:

  • The Camera

How to use the 16mm Bolex camera (loading, operating, lenses, macro, cable release, rewind); camera accessories that enable special effects; exposing film and using light meters.

  • Film Processing

Darkroom orientation and using film chemistry: processing B&W 16mm film; loading the Lomo developing tank; mixing and using caffenol*; ecological responsibility and care when working with film materials; resourcefulness with 16mm analogue film at a time when certain stocks are disappearing.

* a DIY, less toxic alternative to industry developers

Vicky Smith employs animation and performance to explore conditions of fragility, tenacity, vulnerability and resilience. Marking directly onto film and also extending aspects of
contact to in-camera haptic imagery, she activates the tension between the physical and material. Her work screens internationally, recently: Courtisane Festival, Ghent (2023); Femme ’n isms: Bodies Are Fluid, Oberlin, US (2023); xviii online programme series: Ritual; We Shine, Portsmouth (2022); Scratch Expanded: 40 Years of Light Cone, Paris (2022); Splash, Scratch, Dunk!
