This short introductory course will help familiarise participants with the LUX Archive, a wide-ranging, international collection of over 7,000 works of artist moving image developed since the founding of the London Film-Makers’ Co-operative in 1966. We will explore how the archive has grown and changed over the years, in particular focusing on its relevance to artists, curators and researchers today, as well as examine ways to search through the archive to find works that are overlooked and rarely-seen. A selection of works will be shown that will illuminate these points of discussion and reflect different approaches to researching in the collection.

Herb Shellenberger is a curator, writer and producer based in London. He is a graduate of the Central Saint Martins/LUX MRes Moving Image programme and has curated screenings at institutions such as Arnolfini, International House Philadelphia, Light Industry, LUX, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts and Berwick Film & Media Arts Festival, which he joined as Associate Programmer in 2016. His writing has appeared in Art-Agenda, The Brooklyn Rail and Vdrome. In February 2017, he curated the series ‘Independent Frames: American Experimental Animation in the 1970s + 1980s’ which debuted at Tate Modern and will tour internationally.
