‘The project began at the 2009 Oberhausen Short Film Festival with a collective decision to use the LUX Associates Artist project budget of £10,000 to purchase a house in Detroit, Michigan.

Two years later, some of us return from Detroit grateful that no one bought anything.

After long negotiations, both productive and unproductive, the group had splintered into parts, with an equal budget being allocated to the members to produce semi-individuated work.  The remainder of £700 was offered to any stranger who would vacate his or her London home for a weekend. This home would host the work and a final discussion amongst the group.

Detroit is a series of projects that cohere as responses to the discussions and problems generated by an initial proposal of buying a property in Detroit Michigan. It is our hope that these projects can address some questions concerning ethics, stereotypes, practicalities, desire, globalism, alienation, longevity/temporality (legacy/immediacy), the problem of publicity in this context, consensus, communal decision making vs individual decisions and the complications ignited by the action of injecting ourselves into a situation as extreme and burdened as this. ‘
