The ‘Cinematographa’ Cine Camera Workshops at LUX

Join us for two cine camera-based workshops led by Margaret Salmon, coinciding with the launch of ‘Cinematographa’, a book and podcast, at the Open City Documentary Festival. Over two days, Salmon will host two workshops, each tailored for either amateur or experienced filmmakers.

This workshop is supported by Open City Documentary Festival and Kodak.

Workshop 1: Recreational Filming: Super 8mm in Waterlow Park

The first ‘Cinematographa’ workshop will be an outdoor filmmaking workshop. Participants will gather at LUX’s building in Waterlow Park and work collaboratively on a Super 8mm film about the park.

The day will begin with a technical seminar introducing and exploring the basic operation and uses of the Super 8mm Cine Camera. Following this camera induction, collaborative groups will plan and make/shoot a film in the park, using an ‘in-camera’ edit as method. LUX will process the results and students will be able to access their work online.

LUX will provide Super 8mm cameras and support with film stock, developing, and scanning.

No prior experience is necessary. Please bring outdoor clothing, good humour and a packed lunch.

Capacity: 8 people

Fee: General £140 Concession: £70

Artist Biography:

Margaret Salmon (b. 1975, New York) lives and works in Glasgow. Concerned with a shifting constellation of relations, such as those between camera and subject, human and animal, or autobiography and ethnography, Margaret Salmon’s work often examines the gendered, emotive dynamics of social interactions and representational forms. Solo exhibitions of her work have been held at institutions including Secession, (2023), DCA (2018/19), Tramway (2018) Staatsgalerie Stuttgart (2015); Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis, USA (2011); Witte de With Centre for Contemporary Art, Rotterdam (2007); Whitechapel Art Gallery, London (2007) and Collective Gallery, Edinburgh (2006). Her work has been featured in film festivals and major international survey exhibitions, including the upcoming Yokohama Triennial (2024), The British Art Show 9 (2021/22), Glasgow International (2021), Berlin Biennale (2010) and Venice Biennale (2007) London Film Festival (2018, 2016, 2014). Salmon won the inaugural MaxMara Art Prize for Women in 2006, and the 2021 Paul Hamlyn Foundation Awards for Artists.

Material Cost Breakdown:

Analogue filmmaking is a valuable but pricey practice and while we strongly believe in the value of these workshops, we also recognise that financial constraints may be a barrier to participating. We want to therefore be transparent and communicate the material cost breakdown for the workshops. We also strive to work towards putting on more affordable workshops alongside these ones in the future.

  • Three rolls of 50 D 8mm film + shipping: £140
  • Rental price of two X super 8 film cameras: £70

  • I may stress about meeting my basic needs but still regularly achieve them.
