LUX is establishing a new subject specialist network for collecting institutions working artists’ moving image in the UK to enable the sharing of skills and knowledge in a complex and dynamic area of contemporary arts practice. The network will provide information and a support structure for institutions who are working with, or wish to work with artists’ moving image within their collections.

The network will be ultimately guided by the needs and interests of the members but potential areas of focus will include:
– Histories and contexts of artists’ moving image practice in the UK and internationally.
– Histories and models of selling and editioning moving image works.
– Good practices around accessioning and cataloguing moving image works in art collection contexts. – Moving image mediums and technologies – past and future.
– Impact of digital technologies on works and audience expectations.
– Good practice around exhibiting works.
– Production processes, recoupment strategies and commission to collect models. – Contracts
– Copyright and fair use.
– Engaging audiences with moving image work.
– Accessibility issues in moving image. – Loaning and circulating works.
– Joint purchasing of works.

Meetings will be augmented with expert speakers, workshops and case studies wherever possible but the intention is it will be an opportunity for members to learn from each other, develop their professional skills and collaborate on setting a mutually beneficial agenda. In the longer term it is hoped that the network could commission research and resources which would be beneficial across the whole sector.

The network will meet twice a year once online and once in person, with each meeting hosted at a member museum, the network will span all English regions and UK nations.
Meetings will be supported by an online discussion group and telephone/online support from LUX for members as well as research access to the LUX collection.

For more information or if you represent a UK collecting organisation that would like to join the network please contact [email protected]

The Artists’ Moving Image Collections Network is supported by the Art Fund.
