Your Voice reworks the idea of the early promo pop video. It uses Those Were the Days as its theme, a old Russian folk song which became popular in the west after Paul McCartney produced an English-language version with Mary Hopkin. This 1968 hit was accompanied by a in-studio promo film, just prior to the era of ‘creative’ music videos. Part of Elkin’s interest lies in the act of miming in pop recordings, or the simulation of liveness, and questions what it might mean to be a woman performing voiceless in this context.
