During the COVID 19 pandemic, Williams Gamaker was invited by artist Bianca Hlywa to support Refugee Solidarity South East, an online fundraiser for Lewisham Refugee and Migrant Centre and Donate4Refugees. Locked down, with limited equipment, a newborn and homeschooling her eldest, the film takes an intimate look at living together. Whilst not an endorsement of motherhood, breastfeeding or raising children, the film documents the ‘material’ surrounding the filmmaker, whose engorged breasts reveal the network of veins, which sustain her baby. Shot out of focus and playing with depth of field, the artist traces these blue lines with eyeliner. Claustrophobic in its proximity, a cyclical, tender banality unfolds between the child she feeds, the film memorabilia and photo of herself as a baby in her mother’s arms, and her daughter playing dress up in front of a mirror. This film is a return to performing to camera, documenting shelter, everyday life and survival within the pandemic.
