The clenched fist is a political thriller. A group of terrorists/ urban gorillas/ freedom fighters kidnap a civil servant’s daughter and demand plans of high security installations as her ransom. The civil servant hires a private detective, who sets about tracking down the guerrillas through a defector. As the plot progresses through several violent and exciting action sequences to the triumphant confrontation on Brighton beach between the detective, the civil servant and the guerrilla leader, several questions pose themselves: is the detective risking death at every turn from purely mercenary motives, or also from a political belief as strong as that of the guerrillas? And must a threatened and demoralised establishment (in the shape of the civil servant) rely on a third force (in the shape of the detective) to defend itself? Both noise and silence are used to represent violent excitement, and extreme variations in lighting levels to reflect mood. The film, which I hope will appeal to a wide audience, will provoke responses on the several levels – both simple and complex – on which the film operates. – D.B.
