WELCOME (the Atrium) is the first in an ongoing series of videos, in which each episode unfolds a different room within the notional architecture of a fictional museum. The episodes are constructed to operate independently, but also to expand the wider conceptual proposition of the project. So the series could be seen as a portmanteau. The museum that is being ‘built’ is a place of fantasy and in many respects it does not look like a museum. No architecture is featured, or indeed any visible human action. However this fantasy museum does operate like one in certain respects: it is the storehouse for a large collection of material culture, and within its spaces and structures (digital and conceptual) that material is selected, organised and presented to compose narratives. This collection of material culture is the only thing visible, and the idea of the museum is established and animated using it.WELCOME is the first episode, and it establishes the Atrium of the Museum. It features a fountain: a grotesque edifice of chrome ducting, wheel hubs, racks and display stands bearing a range of chocolate and fondue fountains. This fountain throbs and belches in a lovely and profane display – it acts as the corrupt heart of the fictional museum, and introduces its image repertoire of waste, excess and redundancy.
