Subjects of State, Labours of Love: Sheffield presents an intimate portrait of Sheffield and District African Caribbean Community Association which captures the shared joys, celebrations, struggles, oppressions and complexities experienced by Caribbean heritage communities.
Exploring the difficulties of maintaining space in the current UK economic climate, the film considers a thriving community space across generations, considering the history of the Caribbean association as a manufacturing site in part of Sheffield’s industrial past, but now a central part of the social fabric of the city which houses social events like dancing and dominoes. A younger generation talks about the importance of archiving from the perspective of what future generations of Black people living in the UK might need, and how their acceptance in UK society influences the viability of the space.
