Hybrid Vigor brings together appropriated material from historical archives and contemporary society. Music replaces dialogue, lyrics in the songs address ideas present in the video. At one point ‘Africa’ by Toto is mixed with ‘Shake ya ass’ by the rapper Mystikal to completely remove any sense of seriousness that may be present.Language becomes a tool to directly address the viewer, therefore implicating them in the work. Phrases such as ‘You are looking really African today’ are just as likely to appear in the work as words such as ‘Fagette’ or ‘Boygina’.Hybrid Vigor explores the materiality of video by making visible it’s edges.
