Stephen Dwoskin’s film is a personal exploration of “The Ballet Negres”, the first all-black dance company in Europe based in London.
It looks at the company’s history and the attitudes toward it as expressed through reviews and news coverage of the time. Young modern dancers rehearse, recreate, and perform the Company’s classic piece “They Came”, and the rest of the repertoire is illustrated with a variety of techniques to express the essence of each story. After 35 years the reunion of the original members of the company unlocks memories that vividly evoke the energy and excitement of the group.’
