23rd Psalm Branch was made in 1966 in response to the Vietnam War. Created under the influence of Tacitus and Edward Gibbon, it pushes 8mm film to its furthest limits and remains one of Brakhage’s most compelling works, an abstract ‘apocalypse of the imagination’ and a rigorous analysis of sources and motivations.
