The New Flesh Artists’ Residency / Commission

We are seeking applications from artists working with moving image to take part in a 4 month residency May – Sep 2019.

The New Flesh is an individually tailored program for an artist, or collective, to use the facilities and resources of Academy Costumes to develop a new video work. The artist receives curatorial and technical support from art collective ZOOX, including mentoring sessions from other artists, gallery visits, and reading material. We expect the artist to create a new work as a result of the residency which will be exhibited or screened at LUX. 

Each residency lasts approximately 4 months and is intended to support emerging artists with no gallery representation, and preferably without having completed an MA course.

Artists receive:

– A daily wage for three days per week (total £4800)
– A production budget (to be assigned according to artist’s needs)
– A desk studio space at Academy Costumes
– Access to costumes and facilities at Academy Costumes
– Access to a film studio
– Mentoring from artists Jennet Thomas and Molly Palmer, and staff at LUX
– A solo presentation, and online screening of their work at LUX
– Presentation of their work Berwick Film and Media Art Festival 2019 (TBC)
– Support in developing a public artist talk
– Access to Nikon D5500 camera
– A small library of books at Academy Costumes
– Technical support for the production of their work

Application Procedure

Portfolio
– Max 10 works. Please include the following details – title, date, medium, dimensions, short description (max 100 words).
– A CV, please note we are not looking for extensive CVs, what we need is an indication of your exhibition and educational history.
– Motivational letter Max 500 words. Please explain why you would like to take part in the residency, how it is relevant to your practice, and a brief project proposal if you have one in mind (this is not mandatory).
– Reference including the email of one referee.

Timeline

Deadline – Monday 6th May at midnight.Selection by panel – Week commencing Monday 6th May

Selection panel: Georgie Brinkman (Curator, The New Flesh), Benjamin Cook (Director, LUX), Peter Taylor (Director, BFMAF) and Jennet Thomas (Artist, Reader in Time Based Media and Performance).

The artist will be expected to begin their residency imminently after selection, around mid-May. They will work for four months until mid-September, and will have a solo presentation of their work at the end of September.
