Announcing LUX Artist in Residence 2021

March 16, 2021

We’re pleased to announce that Kim Coleman will be the LUX Artist in Residence from March to August 2021

Kim Coleman (UK, 1976) is an artist working with expanded moving-image, stage lighting, live performance, and photography. Her installations, live works, and still images consider affective dynamics between bodies, including how love and friendship are navigated in current cultural and technological landscapes. Kim’s work is often co-authored, examining communication and how multiple subjectivities are expressed and combined within artworks made by more than one person.

During her residency Kim will develop new moving image alone and with existing collaborators, as well as through public sessions via Zoom – which will be advertised through LUX shortly.

Kim’s residency has been made possible by the SWWDTP Doctoral Training Partnership and Reading School of Art where she is studying for a. Ph.D. with Prof. Rachel Garfield and Prof. Regenia Gagnier (University of Exeter). Kim’s doctoral project considers historic co-authored moving image in relation to her own practice, with a focus on co-authored self-portraits and how such works trouble normative relationship ideals, and reveal and explore dynamics between bodies such as interdependence and relational aspects of identity creation.

Kim’s solo and collaborative works have been staged at Nottingham Contemporary, Tate St.Ives, Palais de Tokyo, Tate Britain, The Tom of Finland Foundation, FRAC Champagne-Ardenne, The Showroom, The ICA, Frieze Projects for Frieze London, Serpentine Screen, Minneapolis Film Festival, MS Dockville, Block Universe, Palais de Tokyo, Glasgow International, Jerwood Visual Arts, The Athens Biennale, and Edinburgh Art Festival. Kim was a LUX Associate Artist in 2009/10.

Kim’s work can be viewed at

A large projection of abstract and wavy shapes in shades of blue fills the entire wall. The dark room is dimly lit by the blue glow of the projection.
