This Work isn’t For Us is an ongoing study, initiated by Jemma Desai. Partly a critical appraisal of historic ‘diversity’ initiatives, partly an alternative policy document, the study is also an embodied ethnography, assembling testimonies from arts workers navigating institutionally initiated gestures at ‘inclusion’.
This series of encounters bring together some of the artists and practices that continue to shape the work.
The third session is with Rabz Lansiquot whose research and programming exploring Black liberation and the limits of representation instigated a dialogue between Jemma and Rabz. Here they come together to share thoughts on the possibilities and limitations of a programming and curation practice that must inevitably engage with oppressive structures and discuss ways that we can preserve our full selves when attempting these encounters.

Jemma Desai is a born and bred Londoner who is reconsidering her work biography after having spent the last year looking straight into the void of institutional life. She is currently a researcher and writer, sometimes talks about her feelings in public, and used to have a film programming practice that she hopes to re-imagine in a better future.

Rabz Lansiquot is a filmmaker, programmer, curator, and DJ. They were a leading member of sorryyoufeeluncomfortable (SYFU) collective from its inception in 2014 and now work alongside Imani Robinson as the artistic and curatorial duo Languid Hands, who are the Cubitt Curatorial Fellows for 2020-21. Rabz was Curator In Residence at LUX Moving Image in 2019, developing a public and educational programme around Black liberatory cinema. Their first solo exhibition where did we land, an experimental visual essay exploring the use of images of anti-black violence in film and media, was on view at LUX in Summer 2019, presented alongside a programme of screenings and a study day. They have put together film programmes at the ICA, SQIFF, Berwick Film & Media Festival and were a programme advisor for London Film Festival’s Experimenta strand in 2019 and are on the selection committee for Sheffield Doc Fest 2020. Rabz is also training to deliver workshops in working with Super 8 and eco-processing at not.nowhere.
