The University of Reading and LUX are holding a symposium at the ICA London to mark the recent acquisition of the archive of acclaimed filmmaker Stephen Dwoskin (1939 – 2012) and to celebrate his work and other achievements in his life. We are inviting papers from art historians, film historians, film-makers and artists which reflect on  Dwoskin’s work and contributions to independent film and culture both in the UK and internationally.

Potential areas which papers may explore include: Dwoskin as a motivating force in independent film, critical response to his films,  Dwoskin’s significance as a campaigner for disability rights, the debates about Dwoskin’s engagement with feminism and the camera of desire, his writings and graphic work, the connecting links between his films and the writing of Bataille, Beckett, and or Joyce, his influence on and relationships with film makers. Other themes will also be considered.

A 200–300 word abstract should be submitted to Dr Rachel Garfield ([email protected]), Department of Art, University of Reading by 6 January 2014
