Collection / Structure & series

The works in this list have in common that they abide, more or less strictly, by self-imposed formulas. In their various ways, they use repetition and a structural or serial logic to organise their elements. Some of the artists would have identified themselves as 'structuralists’, many others would have been horrified by the label – but all of them share a certain interest in formalism. (For those particularly interested in the 'structuralist’ filmmaking of the 1960s and '70s, see some of the books in the Study section, especially Structural Film Anthology by Peter Gidal (Editor), British Film Institute, 1976.)
